Home Again

king home againToday is Monday, June 17, 2013.

The song “Home Again” is another one that came out on the Tapestry album.  Once again, when it came out, I didn’t have the requisite life experience to appreciate it, but I resonated deeply with it when I was in Japan, after my divorce.  I didn’t see any way to get back to my home country, since I had no teaching credentials in the United States, and I couldn’t envision any other job but teaching. I could have gotten teaching credentials, but I had chosen not to, reasoning that I was going to spend the rest of my life in Japan, anyway.  What could I possibly want with U.S. teaching certification?   Of course, that just goes to show how wrong we can be when predicting our own future.

Here’s a link to the song.

Home Again  (C. King)

Sometimes I wonder if I’m ever gonna make it home again
It’s so far and out of sight
I really need someone to talk to, and nobody else
Knows how to comfort me tonight

Snow is cold, rain is wet
Chills my soul right to the marrow
I won’t be happy till I see you alone again
Till I’m home again and feeling right

Snow is cold, rain is wet
Chills my soul right to the marrow
I won’t be happy till I see you alone again
Till I’m home again and feeling right
Till I’m home again and feeling right

I wanna be home again and feeling right

I don’t know what King was thinking about when she wrote this song, but I do know she was divorced before this song was written.  After the divorce, she moved away from New York with her two daughters, although the place she moved to was nowhere near the place she was born.

For me, “home” was always the U.S.A., and I learned that at night, especially when the weather was rainy or cold, homesickness would strike with a vengeance.  I used to change the words, “I won’t be happy til I see you alone again,” to “I won’t be happy til I see you at home again,” because there was no one person that I was singing to.  I wasn’t missing one special person.  I was just missing home and family, in general.  :-/
