Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In

FifthDimensionToday is Wednesday, June 18, 2013.

When I was a freshman at the University of Kansas, I was allowed to take Honors English, which meant that I had the opportunity to take some truly interesting classes.  One of those was a study of the American musical format, which is like a play set to music, or an opera.  We read the libretto as we would read a play, then talked about the characters, plot, and scenes, as you would normally do, but we also studied the various musicals for their effect on culture.  At the time, the musical, Hair, was still running on Broadway.  It debuted on Broadway in April, 1968, and ran for 1,750 performances.  There were other simultaneous productions going on, as well as a number of revivals over the years.  The musical was made into a film in 1979.  A number of songs from this show became anthems for the anti-Vietnam War movement.  My favorite song in the show is “Aquarius,” because it seems so hopeful, spelling out in what seemed like tantalizing detail all the wonderful things that could happen when the planets were aligned.

The song peaked at number one for six weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in the spring of 1969. The single became the first medley to top the American pop charts and was eventually certified platinum in the U.S.  The song listed at #57 on Billboard’s “Greatest Songs of All Time.”

Here is a link to the song.

Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In
(Lyrics by James Rado & Gerome Ragni, music by Galt MacDermot)

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
Age of Aquarius
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind’s true liberation
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
Age of Aquarius
Aquarius!
Aquarius!
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

[Instrumental and tempo shift]

Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in
Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in
Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in

[Continue to end with concurrent scat (below)]

Oh, let it shine, c’mon
Now everybody just sing along
Let the sun shine in
Open up your heart and let it shine on in
When you are lonely, let it shine on
Got to open up your heart and let it shine on in
And when you feel like you’ve been mistreated
And your friends turn away
Just open your heart, and shine it on in

Roughly every 2,150 years, the sun’s position at the time of the March, or vernal, equinox moves in front of a new Zodiac constellation. The Age of Aquarius will begin when the March equinox point moves out of the constellation Pisces and into the constellation Aquarius. When will that be? There’s no definitive answer.  If you listen to the astronomers, this will happen in 2597.  However, astrologers have a different interpretation.  Unfortunately, there’s no agreement on when the Age of Pisces began, either.  By one reckoning, the Age of Aquarius began in March of 2012.  One person fixed the date at 1844, while another marks it at the year 3573.  If it was 2012, we certainly haven’t got to the point where peace has guided this planet.  Maybe that will happen by 3573, though.  You never can tell.

As far as alignment of planets goes, there have been some spectacular alignments.  Six planets aligned in May of 2011.  Another alignment was supposed to take place on December 21, 2012.  It seemed that nothing that much happened, but again, you never know.  Energies may have shifted, but if so, people have not responded in the way the song seems to predict.

If an astrological age lasts about 2,150 years, just think about what life was like that many years ago, and compare it to what life is like now.  Although we do many of the same things people did over two thousand years ago (eat, sleep, marry, have kids, etc.), modern life is really nothing like it was then. In another 2,150 years, we can’t even imagine what life on earth will be like.  We may be seen as having lived in a time of crude medical knowledge, epic misunderstandings about the way the world works, and senseless violence.

In any event, it’s exciting to sing about a future that may very well be in store for humanity one day, if we play our cards right.  🙂
