Today is Tuesday, September 24, 2013.
A few days ago, a new billboard went up in Memphis, Tennessee. It cost Fred Davis, an African-American insurance agent, $6,000 to rent billboard space to put up a sign with the message, “Show your mind. Not your behind.” Davis paid for the sign out of his own private funds.
Davis is the only African-American among the 100 most influential insurance agents in the United States. A long-time civil rights activist, he once walked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960s. Like many Americans, Davis believes that wearing sagging pants and showing one’s underwear is a sign of low education and it links a person in many people’s minds with gangs and crime. Davis wants young people, especially African-American young men, to realize that “it’s all about your mind.” He has told news media that the reaction so far has been positive.
These days, it’s not only Black males who need this message. I’ll bet anything that Miley Cyrus’ dad wishes she would pay attention.
What do you think? 🙂
