Chief Arvol Looking Horse and the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe

Chief Arvol Looking Horse

Chief Arvol Looking Horse

Today is Saturday, November 16, 2013.

Chief Arvol Looking Horse is the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe.  He was charged with keeping the Sacred Pipe Bundle at the age of 12 by the previous keeper.  He is widely recognized as a chief and as the spiritual leader of all branches (Lakota, Dakota and Nakota) of the Sioux tribe.

Chief Looking Horse was born on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota in 1954.  He was raised by his grandparents, Thomas and Lucy Looking Horse.  He speaks Lakota and English.  He focuses on three main things in his position as spiritual leader.  1)  He is dedicated to the principle of religious freedom, specifically the freedom of Native Americans to worship in their traditional ways. He is an advocate of maintaining traditional spiritual practices and ceremonies.  2)  He works for the survival of the Lakota culture, specifically, and Indigenous cultures, in general.  3) He works for the healing of Mother Earth through the practice of peace throughout the world.  He is the author of White Buffalo Teachings and a guest columnist for Indian Country Today.  Chief Looking Horse is also the founder of Big Foot Riders, a group of  that memorializes the massacre of Big Foot’s band at Wounded Knee on December 29, 1890.  A group of people stage a 300-mile ride on horseback from Standing Rock to Pine Ridge, going from camp to camp, in memory of  the massacre of more than 250 men, women and children by the U.S. Cavalry at Wounded Knee.

For an excellent rendition of the “Legend of White Buffalo Calf Woman,” who is said to have brought the White Buffalo Calf Pipe to the people and who taught them the Seven Sacred Ceremonies, click here.    (The seven ceremonies are the Purification Ceremony, the Healing Ceremony, the Marriage Ceremony, the Naming Ceremony, the Making Relatives Ceremony, the Vision Ceremony (vision quest), and the Sun Dance Ceremony.)

White buffalo calves began to be born in 1994, and since then several white buffalo calves are born each year.  Since these are normally rare events, Chief Looking Horse says the prophecy of the White Buffalo Calf Woman is now coming true.

I plan to write more about Chief Looking Horse and his messages in future posts. Stay tuned. 🙂

  1. Victoria

I would like to speak with Chief Looking Horse. The release of ‘Whirling Rainbow’ the book and songs celebrate the truth and wisdom that returns with the White Buffalo Woman . It’s a follow up to “Wild Little Indian’ a children’s book due for release this coming month by the Tate Publishing company. I would like to send copies to him before release for approval and to honor his position among the Nations for his faithful guarding of the traditions that bind us as a people .
