Blazing Your Own Trail

clear path is someone elsesToday is Sunday, December 8, 2013.

If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s. – Joseph Campbell

When you stop to realize that each and eery person and thing in this Universe is different from every other, it kind of boggles the mind, but it does help to explain why it’s a good idea to blaze our own trails, rather than just follow trails made by others.  Even so-called identical twins have some unique fingerprints; did you know that?   If we were made unique, then there must be some unique reason for us to be here.

I think it’s fine to tread the same path as others at some times in our lives,, but if we do so, wouldn’t it be better to blaze the trail at the same time as others, or at least make your own contribution to the path?   It’s fine if our paths are parallel with the paths of others, or if our paths intersect with them.  No one’s path needs to be totally separate for the whole distance.

What does it mean to blaze our own trail?  To me, it means doing my own thinking and listening to my own inner wisdom. It means trusting my gut feelings and making sure that my needs are met, even as I help to meet the needs of others.  It means that my life is not exactly like anyone else’s, and that’s OK.  It means that I may not agree with the majority of people, even if I manage to learn to get along with them.

Blazing our own trail is hard work, and I think people sometimes join a more well-traveled path just to get some rest.  If we see that we have been on the common path a little too long, we can always go our own way again.  REO Speedwagon’s song “Blazing Your Own Trail Again” speaks to this idea of realizing that, every once in a while, we need to remind ourselves to blaze our own trail… again.   One key phrase in the lyrics is, “Just decide where you’re going.”   If you don’t have a destination in mind, how can you blaze a trail?  Well, I guess you could do that, but the trail wouldn’t lead anywhere.  Here are the lyrics to the song.  Click on the hypertext above to hear the song.

Sooner or later you will find a way
To feel like sunshine even on a cloudy day,
To feel like morning in the dead of night;
Sooner or later it’s gonna be all right. Now don’t go thinking your life’s a mess.
Rather, start thinkin’ in terms of happiness. And it’s gonna happen.
Just decide were you’re goin’.
Get out in the open
And start blazin’ your own trail again. It takes time sometimes to figure out
That there’s nothing to worry about
And that there’s plenty to be thankful for.
It takes time sometimes to know the score.

See, everybody’s got a smile inside,
So put it upon your face and wear it with pride.

And it’s gonna happen.
Just decide were you’re goin’.
Get out in the open
And start blazin’ your own trail again.
