There’s a story going around the Internet in various forms of two fetuses in the womb, preparing to be born. I’ve changed the wording once again, to avoid copying altogether. One source attributes the story to Dr. Jirina Prekop, PhD, a Czech Psychologist, translated into English by Ily Reis,

In a mother’s womb there were two babies. One asked the other: “Do you believe in life after delivery?”
The other replied, “Of course, I do. We must be here right now to prepare ourselves for whatever comes next. There must be something after this!”
“No way,” says the first. “There’s nothing after this. What would that life be like, anyway?”
“I don’t know, but I think there will be more light than there is in here. Maybe we’ll walk with our legs and eat from our mouths.”
“This is absurd! Walking is impossible. You know that. And eat with our mouths? That’s ridiculous. The umbilical cord supplies all our nutrition. Besides, we can’t just walk away. The umbilical cord is too short for us to go very far from here.”
“Well, I think there is something, and maybe it’s way different than it is in here. Maybe we won’t need an umbilical cord!”
“No one has ever come back from there. Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and anxiety and it takes us nowhere.”
“Well, I don’t know, but one thing’s for sure: we’ll see mother and she’ll take care of us.”
“Mother??” You believe in mother? Where is she now? C’mon, show me where she is!”
“She is all around us. It is in her that we live. Without her there would not be this world.”
“Well, I don’t see her, so I don’t believe she exists. That’s the only logical conclusion!”
“Oh, I don’t know. Sometimes when you’re silent, you can hear her, you can feel her presence. I believe there is a reality after delivery and we are here to prepare ourselves for that reality.”

Of course, we all know that there is life after delivery, because here we are, and we’re experiencing it. What some of us are not so sure about is whether there’s life after this physical life.
When you’re down on the ground and it’s very cloudy, you can’t see the sun, but you know it’s up there. Why? Because someone told you. And sometimes you can even see it peeking out from a hole in the clouds. But until you’ve been up in an airplane, you can’t be absolutely sure. When you get a chance to fly above the cloud cover, then come back down underneath, where it’s raining, you can finally be absolutely sure that the sun is shining brightly up there. You know because you saw it; you experienced it.
Oh, to have that feeling of absolute certainty! What we wouldn’t give to know for sure what happens after the death of the body!
Some people do have that certainty. One group of people is composed of those who have had a near-death experience. These people have had amazing, highly detailed experiences in which they have met some loving presence, perhaps of someone they knew who has passed on or perhaps a loving soul whom they can’t place here on earth, but whom they recognize as a friend or a spiritual mentor. Many of them get to ask questions. Some of them get to see the future consequences of their current actions, or sometimes they see how their past actions affected other people. The vast majority of them describe a feeling of being absolutely and unconditionally loved, and they come back with a new sense of purpose for their lives. They have experienced themselves as Soul without the physical body, and they know that life is eternal.
Another group of people are certain for a different reason. These are people who have been able to experience themselves purely as Soul, without having to “almost die.” Most of these people are capable of deep meditation in which they focus so completely on their inner selves that the body seems to drop away. They have experiences in what we would call “heaven” and are able to talk to spiritual guides and even some Souls who have recently left the earth plane. These people, also, seem to have more of a sense of purpose in their lives, and a deep feeling of being absolutely and unconditionally loved.
These people, no matter how they manage to do it, have experienced themselves as Soul, and they have literally been to heaven. They know what’s next, and they are no longer afraid. They know it’s a wonderful place, but they come back to the physical world because they know that this place is a good place, too, that it is unique in all of God’s creation as a place for Soul’s learning and maturation, and that we who are embodied here have earned the right to attend this particular school.
Like the little unborn child who believes in “life after delivery,” these people know that there is life after death, and that we are here to prepare ourselves for that life. What will it be like? We may not know all the details, but we can be sure that it has been created by God especially for us, whether we believe it or not. And like the little one who believes in the Mother that he has not yet seen, these people believe in God and sense God’s loving presence, even though they cannot point to one particular being that they can call God.
How can you be so sure? The first step is to ask to be shown. When the student is ready, the teacher appears. 🙂
