What You Resist, You Feed

resisting equals feeding Today is Wednesday, August 28, 2013.

“If you are resisting something, you are feeding it.  Any energy you fight, you are feeding.  If you are pushing something away, you are inviting it to stay.”  –Michael Singer

This sounds like a contradiction in terms, but if you check out the Law of Reversed Effort on the web, you will find that a lot of people have written about it, for a lot of reasons.  That’s because, no matter how crazy it sounds, it’s true.  This is why people have trouble losing weight or making their first million dollars.  It’s why many people can’t seem to quit smoking.  It’s the reason that insomniacs have trouble falling asleep.

When you want to fall asleep, you are resisting being awake, right?  When you are trying to quit smoking, you are resisting smoking.  When you are trying to lose weight, you are resisting eating and you are resisting being fat.  When you are trying to make your first million, you are resisting being poor.  The thing you are resisting has negative connotations for you, and you probably have some negative feelings about it.  It is well known that negative emotions are stronger and more powerful than positive ones, and this is a key point, because the energy of the negative emotions is what draws the thing you are resisting into your life.

People who spend their time trying to lose weight have one thing in mind: “I am too fat.”  And they hate that.  They have strong emotions about that.  The universe responds to the energy of those emotions and draws “being fat” into their lives.    People who spend time earning money have one thing in mind:  “I don’t have enough money.”  Same thing: the universe draws in the energy of not having enough money.

People who spend their time on health are often the ones who face the most debilitating illnesses.  Why?  Their main thought is, “I’m not healthy enough.”   Similarly, people who spend their days “resisting the devil” are the very ones who will see “the devil” at work every day of their lives, because that’s what they are focusing on.  Their main thought is, “The devil is ever-present,” and sure enough, for them, it is.

The key is to stop resisting, to stop trying so hard.  Instead of telling yourself that you are too fat, tell yourself that you are healthy and fit, and that you love your life.  Instead of telling yourself that you don’t have enough money, try telling yourself that you are surrounded by plenty of whatever it is you need.   Instead of telling yourself that you are not as healthy as you should be, tell yourself that you are in perfect condition and that you are willing to do anything to maintain that.  Instead of focusing on the presence of evil in the world, tell yourself that God is in charge, God is all around, and God will always prevail.

Here are some other things that we unconsciously feed:  war and strife in the world, harm done to Mother Earth and the destruction of her natural resources, gun violence, illegal drug use, poverty and the culture of lack.   Think about it.  :-/
